My Artist Life
Ann Mitchell – Mixed Media Portrait Artist
Ann Mitchell is a self-taught mixed media portrait artist based in Gallen, County Offaly. Working with a blend of oils, collage, pen and ink, acrylic paint, and gold leaf, Ann creates ethereal, textured portraits that explore the depths of the human experience. Her early work in mosaic art informs her layered approach, adding a tactile richness that mirrors the complexity of her subjects’ inner worlds.
Ann’s art has an otherworldly yet contemporary quality, marked by vivid, dreamlike aesthetics. Each piece is a meditation on strength, resilience, and beauty—often reflecting the scars of life with quiet pride. Her portraits celebrate the sensuality, power, and enduring courage of women, casting them as proud, resilient warriors.
Since taking early retirement, Ann has dedicated herself fully to her practice. For her, art is a deeply personal form of expression—a way to process her thoughts and emotions while also tapping into broader, universal themes. Through the layering of diverse materials, she evokes the richness of life stories and the transformative nature of self-discovery.
Her work has resonated with audiences both in Ireland and abroad, with collectors in Australia, Canada, France, and the UK. As a resident artist at Urban Oasis Gallery in Tullamore, Ann’s work is continuously on display, and she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
Ann holds a QQI Level 5 and Level 6 in Art and Design, with distinctions in modules including Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and Combined Materials. During the COVID-19 period, she immersed herself in mosaic art, adding another layer to her creative language. She also holds a BA in Social Care and qualifications as a personal trainer and life skills consultant—experiences that lend emotional depth and anatomical precision to her figurative work.
Whether working on a large-scale solo exhibition or serving on the jury of an art showcase, Ann remains committed to championing authentic, empowering narratives through her work.
EDUCATION
Ann completed a QQI Level 5 PCL course in Art and Design with distinction before repeating it to further refine my skills. Then pursued the Advanced Art & Design (Course Code: 6M4029) QQI Level 6 qualification, successfully completing modules in Drawing (6N3569), Painting (6N3452), Printmaking (6N3568), Sculpture (6N3570), and Combined Materials (6N3587).
She expanded my artistic practice by studying mosaic art, creating intricate mosaics using ceramic tiles and jewelry over five years. This experience enriched her mixed media approach, adding depth and texture to her artistic repertoire.
Ann Mitchell holds a BA in Social Care and is also a qualified personal trainer and life skills consultant. Her background in social care has provided a deep understanding of human resilience, emotion, and personal transformation—central themes that often emerge in her art. Additionally, her expertise in anatomy and movement informs her figurative work, adding depth to her exploration of strength and vulnerability.
